"Myths About Bonsai Trees"
Although cultivating of bonsai
trees has grown in popularity
all over the world there are
some myths and misconceptions
still prevailing among some
people. Let's dispel some
of those bonsai tree myths.
Cruelty
Some believe that practice
of bonsai tree cultivation is 'cruel'
to the plants which are 'tortured'
and grossly misshapen. To dispel
this bonsai myth, let's ask
ourselves this question:" Is it
possible to be cruel to an
organism without pain receptors or central nervous system?" Those who
are still not convinced here is another question to ponder over:" How many
of you mow the lawn regularly to keep it short?"
Yes, bonsai trees are dwarfed by design - regular pruning and growing
them in a confined space, the bonsai pot. However, to succeed with bonsai
one should take and maintain very good care of his bonsai trees. It takes a
great deal of care and attention to grow bonsai trees - watering, feeding and
protecting them form adverse weather, more so than any other house plant.
Bonsai Trees As Special Dwarf Cultivars
This is another myth. Because they are so small, bonsai trees must be special
dwarf cultivars. Not at all. They are cuttings from full-sized specimens,
or grown from normal, usual seeds.
Bonsai Trees Are Kept Dwarf by Regular Root Pruning
That's not the case; it is branch pruning that keeps the top of the plant small.
Root pruning is required because the roots of bonsai trees eventually fill
the pot, reducing their growth and making it difficult to water.
Also, the pot has been chosen to harmonize with the tree itself, so, you don't
want to transform your bonsai tree onto a larger pot,
but rather untangle and prune the roots.
Bonsai Trees Must Be Bellow Certain Size
Size is unimportant providing there is a convincing impression of a full-sized
tree in miniature. Bonsai Trees can be anything up to 6ft tall.
Bonsai Trees Are House Plants
Bonsai trees are not house plants. However, there are certain species
that are suitable for indoor environment.
